Girls Rock! DC

NR (2) Burners

This week is the second annual Girls Rock! DC summer camp. Girls Rock! DC is a program for girls that "aims to create a supportive, inclusive and creative space for girls to develop their self-confidence, build community, stand up and rock out!" And Rock Out they do!

Last year I photographed the final showcase, which allowed each band to take the stage and rock the 9:30 Club, a 1,200 person live music venue in DC. It was brilliant! The energy in the club was through the roof. All of the bands killed it, and the crowd seemed like they were cheering for the new Miley Cyrus/Jonas Brothers Super Group.

This year, I spent a day at camp and put five bands through an official photo shoot. I requested a lot of energy, and I couldn't be happier with the results! They were all such naturals. I hope they will have me back again next year, I am still laughing thinking about how much fun I had with these Rock N Roll Superstars!

If you are in the area, the showcase is this Saturday, August 15th at 10:30am. You will not be disappointed!

Brockton Fair

Shiny things
While in Massachusetts a few weeks ago, I paid a visit to my hometown fair. I grew up just blocks from the fairgrounds, so the fair was a a big part of summer during my childhood.
Automatic Balloon

My memories are very mixed. I remember my grandmother saving her pennies in a jar, and then dividing them up among my siblings so we could buy tickets to the rides. We would be so excited to ride the Frizzler, the Thunderbolt, and the Himalaya. High point of the year.
Do. Not. Turn. Around.

However, I also remember my father staying up late and sitting on our porch with a baseball bat to deter any drunken revelers from breaking into our house. Not a high point of the year.
Mmmm, yummy
It is not rare for shootings and other forms of violence to occur during fair time. In fact, there was a shooting the night before I visited. I've been away for at least twelve years, but it is obvious that not much has changed.

The Washington Project for the Arts hosted a synchronized swimming event called Synchro Swim today, at the Skyline Hotel. This wasn't the Olympics though, think of a Devo video meeting summer at the hotel pool while on holiday. Oh and if that isn't crazy enough, MTV was filming the Real World DC there too. It was a interesting day.

My brother got married!

First Dance, B&W

I barely used my camera during the festivities, but I couldn't resist this shot during the first dance. They hired a very capable photographer, Porter Gifford, whose work I love. I am anxious to see his images from the wedding.

Mas Barcelona

Tres Personas

I was hoping to say something intelligent about my trip to Barcelona, but here we are two weeks later with nothing written. I am off to Paris tomorrow, via three days in London, so we will have to settle for more photos. I've never been to London, so I am looking forward to exploring the city, no matter how brief my stay is. Cheers!

Catalunya, Not Spain

Man with hat
I've been in Barcelona all week, and fly back to the States tomorrow. I spent the entire day today walking around the city by myself taking photos. How do you say heaven in Catalan?

POTUS

Both President Bush, and C-3PO, were at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History yesterday. President Bush was there to dedicate the new Star-Spangled Banner Hall. C-3PO lives there.
