I was hoping to say something intelligent about my trip to Barcelona, but here we are two weeks later with nothing written. I am off to Paris tomorrow, via three days in London, so we will have to settle for more photos. I've never been to London, so I am looking forward to exploring the city, no matter how brief my stay is. Cheers!

Catalunya, Not Spain

I've been in Barcelona all week, and fly back to the States tomorrow. I spent the entire day today walking around the city by myself taking photos. How do you say heaven in Catalan?

Both President Bush, and C-3PO, were at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History yesterday. President Bush was there to dedicate the new Star-Spangled Banner Hall. C-3PO lives there.

More Ocean Hall

Last week Jorge Ribas, from Discovery News, emailed me to let me know that he had seen my photos from the Sant Ocean Hall on DCist. He also told me that the photos inspired him to head down to the museum and do a story about the new exhibit. The video is fantastic, and I hope you will check it out.

Jorge also has a blog with some other great videos. Watch the cave piece if you can, it would take a lot to get me to crawl in there with those bats.

It's Here!!

FotoWeek DC starts officially starts tomorrow, but the fun starts tonight! Heather Goss, DC photo goddess, and the force behind Ten Miles Square, is putting on a show with the Pink Line Project. There are a lot of people I know on that list, so I am very excited to see their work tonight. It is also going to be a great party, and great kickoff to FotoWeek. Yay!! It is finally here!

These nine photographers each create a narrative with a short series of images, building the viewer a bridge between the image of our Nation's Capital and the people actually living inside it. Their photographs inspect our city's subculture and the people who thrive in it, whether it is the pure ecstasy of a public baptism or the discovery of an elusive quiet moment as 18th Street rages nearby. Some create their own scenes, driven by the absurdity or crucial absences in our cityscapes. Others sneak in the backdoor of highly defined alternative lifestyles, finding characters dolled up for primetime, squeezed in the underbelly of the D.C. club scene. What they all have in common is a fixation on the individual in the hands of a much bigger picture.

FotoWeek DC Finalists Announced

The listing of all the finalists for FotoWeek DC are now up on their website. I recognize a lot of names on that list, and am happy to be among them. I am excited to see everyone's work at the exhibit, and am looking forward to meeting those I don't know at the Awards Gala. My dance card for that week is filling up quick, there are so many exhibits and events around the city, I wish I had time to see them all! If you are in the area, take a look at the expanding list of events and get out and see a few.

Portrait of a Candidate, by Callie Shell

No matter who you are voting for, if you like photography you will enjoy the photos of Senator Obama on the campaign trail that Callie Shell captured. They first appeared in Time magazine, but the layout and image gallery is much better over on The Digital Journalist. Her intimate access to the Senator, and thoughtful timing, really make these photos quite special. The image of Senator Obama doing a pull up may be one of my favorites. Regardless of who wins, these are images we will be referring to decades from now.

I can't find a web site for Shell, but I would love to see more of her work.

Elliott Erwitt at PDN

Elliott Erwitt, one of my favorite photographers, spoke at the PDN expo on Friday night. I really wanted to get to expo this year, especially with Erwitt speaking, but it just wasn't in the cards. Thankfully there was a nice recap over on the PDN blog. If you aren't familiar with Erwitt, you should check out his web site.

Emerald

This is Emerald, a cat available for adoption at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria Virginia. Emerald was hit by a car, and had surgery to remove his eye. From his cheerful personality you would never know that Emerald has a disability. He loves to play, and loves human contact.

I'm shooting a story about the AWLA for a multi media piece I am creating. The staff and volunteers at the shelter do wonders for the homeless animals, the level of care is quite impressive. I can't wait to finish the project and share it with you.
